I was at Lib Dem conference when the whole Cameron/pig/college ritual story that we don’t need to go into detail about here since you all know what I am talking about broke. It was predictably the talk of Bournemouth. Myself, I had actually heard the whole story for the first time years and years ago, and have had it “revealed” to me by many a Tory lobbyist ever since. I was mostly surprised by the manner in which it ended up seeing the light of day, i.e. via Lord Ashcroft.
That was almost a month a half ago, and already the pig thing seems so tired it feels like it belongs in a long gone epoch, like bowler hats. I swear, if I see another Steve Bell cartoon intimating Cameron’s supposed zoophilia, I may have to never return to the Guardian ever again (all right, that’s a stretch, but I may well enforce a temporary ban on the paper in my house). Word to the Left: no one cares at all whether Cameron stuck his privates in a pig’s mouth when he was a kid. Like, they really, really don’t. On social media late last week, I saw an item that is a perfect example of the kind of thing you still read about regarding the whole pig thing: “Dignified silence? We need to know if “Call me Dave” committed a perverted act /satanic ritual.” You know what, we really don’t. I’m an atheist, and I’m pretty sure from reading their tweets that the person who posted the satanic ritual one is as well, so why should we care in the slightest if Dave took part in a “satanic ritual” anyhow? To me, some satanic ritual is exactly the same as a Christian church service – it’s a ceremony involving a deity I don’t believe exists and don’t care in the slightest about. If I found out tomorrow that David Cameron was a committed Satanist, it would change my whole perception of him zero percent. I think the same is true of a lot of people in this country. The group who should be most happy about this are, ironically enough, the Left. Surely this is ‘cultural Marxism” done to its nth degree?
The ultimate problem with the pig story, and thus why it had no impact, is this: it didn’t reveal anything about Cameron we didn’t kind of know already. He had a privileged upbringing and went to very good schools, where everyone who never attended them imagines things that they get up to there being far worse than sticking one’s genitals in a hog’s head for a giggle anyhow. Yes, he’s kind of posh, and posh people do sort of weird things. Everyone had factored that into the equation already.
The endless “jokes”, demands that “something be done”; they all make the Left sound like they are out of ideas and so thus need to focus on something inconsequential. Worse, the high fallutin’ morality of it all makes them sound like – you guessed it – the Tories at their worst.
